17 reasons we should be grateful for social media

17 reasons we should be grateful for social media http://ift.tt/1PmSwB2 hattiegladwellmetro

Unless you’ve been living in a cave the past two days, it’s pretty likely you’ve heard about Essena O’Neill, the former Instagram model who has decided to quit social media (or at least, in her original identity).

She posted a video online (which has since been deleted) after having captioned a variety of her Instagram photos, revealing the truths behind her online presence.

Although Essena had some good points – predominantly about how there can be dark sides to social media – I believe social media is what you make it.

And personally, I feel we have a lot to be grateful for in regards to social media.

Here’s 17 reasons why.

1. It helps us to communicate with distant friends and family

Social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have allowed us to stay in contact with friends and family who we are unable to see in person,… Read the full story http://ift.tt/1PmT2z1 November 04, 2015 at 07:37PM

This dating app uses professional matchmakers to help you find true love

This dating app uses professional matchmakers to help you find true love http://ift.tt/1MhUAJV Yvette Caster

Ever thought your love life needed professional help?

We may have found the dating app for you.

Once uses trained matchmakers to pair up singles looking for love.

As the name implies, though, you only get one match per day.

Jean Meyer, who founded the free dating app for iOS and Android, says it puts more emphasis on quality over quantity.

He said: ‘People are fed up with having to just sit and swipe through hundreds of people in the hope that they might find one person who they like and then start a conversation with.

With Once, we’re taking that responsibility on ourselves, and are handpicking great people for London’s time-starved daters.’

Dates are matched up by interests, looks and personal preferences, which sounds a bit scary as it takes the decision out of your Tinder-worn hands.

However, it’s still up to you whether you ‘like’ the match and get messaging.

Only time will tell if it’s full… Read the full story http://ift.tt/eA8V8J November 04, 2015 at 07:04PM

Ladybird Books For Grown-Ups – a word with the authors

Ladybird Books For Grown-Ups – a word with the authors http://ift.tt/1NrPmw2 Adam Boult

Ladybird

Ladybird books have long been popular with young readers – and now a new series of books for adults is paying homage to the classic imprint.

If you grew up in Britain in the 60s, 70s or 80s, you’ll almost certainly be familiar with the look of these beautifully illustrated books, which feature artwork from original Ladybird titles.

Comedy writers Joel Morris and Jason Hazeley, whose previous credits include The Framley Examiner, Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe and That Mitchell and Webb Look, were given access to Ladybird’s archive to create a series of titles that includes The Ladybird Book of the Hipster, The Ladybird Book of the Hangover and How it Works: The Husband.

We got in touch with Joel and Jason to ask them about their work.

14 things you’ll only know if you spend your life in and out of hospital http://ift.tt/1McbDcK hattiegladwellmetro

For some, a visit to a hospital is a rare thing, mainly occurring for a random check up or a visit to a relative

For others, you pretty much count the hospital as your second home – with more visits in and out of the place than visits to your own parents’ house.

You know pretty much everything there is to know about the hospital, what to take, what to expect, what to wear. And there’s so much more, too.

Here’s 14 things you’ll only know if you spend your life in and out of hospital.
